**ART CRITICAL INTRODUCTION   ( ENGLISH VERSION   )

(Contemporary Oil Painting Series – Thick Texture, Raw Canvas & Coarse Straps)**

In this contemporary oil painting series, artist Van Thanh opens a powerful and expansive visual world—where colors, materials, and folk memories intertwine to form a painterly language that is both wild and poetic. This body of work marks a significant transformation in his practice, where materials cease to be mere tools of depiction and instead become living entities, breathing alongside the stories of the characters.

The most striking feature of the series is its rugged, heavily textured surface—oil paint is thrown, heaped, and layered to create an unusually thick pictorial terrain. The paint is not tightly controlled but set free, making each canvas feel like an eruption of raw, primitive energy. On this foundation, the artist further intervenes with coarse canvas fragments, straps, and rough woven fibers attached directly onto the surface like patches of memory sewn from the rural life of Southern Vietnam.

What gives the work its distinctive appeal is the artist’s ability to transform roughness into charm. Each seemingly crude textile patch becomes a visual symbol, evoking traditional motifs, ethnic textiles, or even rice fields, betel palms, and the soft shadows of childhood by the river. These are sensory memories materialized.

Within this radiant world, the figures—women, children, groups playing under trees or sharing a colorful umbrella—appear with innocent, playful expressions touched by a delightful naïveté. What seems “naive” in Van Thanh’s work is not a limitation of technique, but a deliberate aesthetic choice: preserving the honest, rustic spirit of the Mekong Delta even within a contemporary visual structure.

Beneath these dense layers of paint lies a strong humanistic spirit:
that people—whether in hardship or in their simple daily lives—remain joyful, lively, and capable of cherishing the smallest happiness.

Overall, this series embodies the essence of Folk Expressionism blended with Contemporary Mixed-Media techniques. While traditional oil painting seeks smoothness, Van Thanh chooses the opposite: thick, tactile, protruding textures—each canvas like a patch of land or a piece of childhood sky, where the material itself becomes the storyteller.

This is a challenging direction; without careful restraint, such works can easily become heavy or chaotic. Yet in this series, we clearly see the hand of a seasoned artist—one who knows how to turn chaos into harmony, roughness into radiance, and memory into art.

The combination of ethnic textile culture, raw materials, and exaggerated human forms creates a visual universe that is at once folk-inspired and modern; rustic yet bold; familiar yet vibrantly inventive. This is the unmistakable signature of Van Thanh’s art—deeply rooted in cultural identity while fully embracing contemporary spirit.

These works are not merely individual paintings; they form an entire world—a landscape of emotions built from childhood, culture, and the fearless creativity of a contemporary Vietnamese artist.
